New prosecutor hopes to make change in Lake County

There is new leadership at the Lake County Prosecutor’s office. Gregory Mick took over the role from the former prosecutor, Craig Cooper at the beginning of January. Mick won the election last November and said he’s fired up for his new role.

Cooper came under fire by the Lake County Sheriff’s office, back in January of 2023, when two unions representing the deputies issued a vote of no confidence.

Mick said it was part of his campaign to change the way the prosecutor’s office is run and now he plans to deliver on it.

He said he’s putting criminals on notice, that if you break the law, it will be enforced.

Mick also said he’s been busy going through a backlog of cases.

“It’s probably no secret to most, most of your viewers, but Lake County has been known for years as the place to come to commit crimes. So, we intend to change that. tough but fair, I guess would be, you know, the nice, short and sweet way to put that, we want to change the mindset and the culture to where Lake County is a place to come to enjoy life, have fun, but not the place to come to commit crimes,” said Mick.

Mick worked in private practice in Chase as a criminal defense attorney before taking on this new role.

Cooper resigned as the Lake County prosecutor December 4th of last year, ending his term early.
