CADILLAC--Local nonprofit Love in the name of Christ of Wexford and Osceola counties wants you to know if you struggle with heating bills, help is available, but it’s best to act before the situation becomes dire.
Over the last week, we’ve seen some of the coldest temperatures of the season, along with dangerous wind chills.
Love Inc, has received 45 calls for propane assistance from low-income households who are struggling to refill their tanks.
Office coordinator Paul King said the non-profit has spent $4,000 on refilling propane tanks for those in need over the last 23 days.
While most people were able to get refills quickly, some had to wait due to scheduling conflicts with busy propane suppliers.
King has a message to anyone who needs help.
“Call us sooner than later, call us now. When you’re at 25% call us, we can start the process of first trying to see if we can get help through the State of Michigan. That 25% will give us enough time to see if you’re going to qualify for that program,” said King. “That will also give us enough time to start calling and working with additional churches and different organizations in our community to try to come up with those funds.”
King said the process to receive heating help through the State of Michigan’s SER program can take nearly three weeks if the application is filled out correctly the first time.
The state program can only be used once.
