In Cheboygan County, Habitat for Humanity, like most chapters across the nation, are paying tribute to Former president Jimmy Carter, a man that helped highlight their mission.
Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity executive director, Mandy Martin said it’s a huge loss for the organization as well as the world.
Martin said although many people incorrectly believe that Carter started Habitat for Humanity, his willingness to go out on job sites and swing a hammer really helped bring national attention to the organization.
Martin said they are inviting the public to come pay their respects at the Cheboygan Habitat Re-Store from January 8th through the 22nd to keep as part of their habitat history.
“When we have volunteers out on, on the build site, we have them sign a two by four. So, sign part of the wall and bless the home, bless the family. So, we have built roughly an eight-foot, interior wall with a door. Our community can come in, write a message, and honor Jimmy Carter,” said Martin.
Martin said the door will become a permanent fixture at their location while other parts of the tribute could be used in other rebuilds or repair projects in Cheboygan County.
