Extreme cold is headed to Northern Michigan with temperatures expected to be in the teens Thursday.
According to the Mayo Clinic, once wind chills fall below 22 degrees people are at risk for frost bite.
Wexford County non-profit Love Inc. is taking steps to help keep those in need warm in more ways than one.
Their new warming center initiative begins tomorrow.
“Oftentimes those homeless shelters ask them to leave during the day. So warm jackets, warm boots, gloves and hats are very important,” said Love Inc. office coordinator Paul King. “One of the things that we’re doing new this year is when the weather does get cold, like it is right now, or a winter storm is on their way, we open our doors during the day from 9:30 till 3PM. People can come here and use it as a warming shelter.
Love Inc. said any overflow from the Salvation Army’s warming center will automatically be bussed to Love Inc. where people can wait out the cold in a cozy environment.
Additionally, Love Inc. has put out a call to action for donations of coats, gloves and boots.
