The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office said an 18-year-old was arrested for arson after burning down a family’s home in Maple Forest Township.
Deputies and firefighters responded to the fire on Sunday, Nov. 24 around 3:30 in the morning. They said the four people inside all escaped without injury, but the home was lost.
One of the family members, a minor, told deputies that a few hours before the fire, they heard strange noises and found someone hiding inside the house. The family searched, but they didn’t find anyone and went back to bed.
A few hours later, the family woke up to their house on fire. While they escaped, they spotted the suspect, 18-year-old Cameron Spencer, running from the home.
Investigators were notified by Antrim County deputies that earlier in the morning, they had handled a car accident involving Spencer. They discovered that Spencer was the former boyfriend of a family member in the Maple Forest Township home.
Spencer was arraigned Tuesday on eight counts – four counts attempted murder, one count each second-degree arson and first-degree home invasion, and two counts malicious destruction of property.
