Munson raises awareness of lung cancer at community event

TRAVERSE CITY — It’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Munson Medical Center in Traverse City is holding a special event to educate the public.

A community event is happening right now at the Cowell Family Cancer Center, with a robot demonstration from their new ion robot, a panel of patients and care providers telling their stories about battling cancer, and even a model learning lung.

“Unfortunately, lung cancer has a fairly high mortality rate if it’s not caught early and there’s not a lot of signs of symptoms. So, a big shift is enrolling people in lung cancer screening where they get CT scans. And we really want to get as many people as we can, enrolled in that,” Brandon Wojick, M.D., Munson Medical Center Cardiothoracic Surgeon.

There was also a pre-event Wednesday with local school students learning about how the medical center treats and cares for one of the most important organs in the human body. The event was also used as a springboard to inspire future nurses, care providers and radiation therapists.

“Also, just to highlight the services that are available in northern Michigan for cancer patients,” says Kendra Worden, N.P.

The Cowell Family Cancer Center serves people across 29 counties in Northern Michigan, providing health and wellness services in addition to critical medical treatments.
