Army Corps of Engineers, Soo Locks contractor to hold public forum on test blasting

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Army Corps of Engineers, along with Soo Locks contractor Kokosing-Alberici-Traylor, will hold another public meeting Thursday to discuss upcoming test-blasting activities.

Test blasting will take place next month on a semi-regular basis as weather allows. The blasting will be done in the southwest footprint of the new lock, Monday through Saturday during daylight hours.

“It’s really about getting calibrated to how the rock is going to behave and how the systems are going to perform and what we are going to see in terms of vibrations, because blasting is one of those things that is very much engineered – the amount of explosives, the placement of explosives and the timing,” said Rachel Miller, supervisory civil engineer.

The new lock is expected to be completed by 2030.

A public meeting in July yielded some questions about the effect of the explosions to surrounding areas, so it’s important for the community to participate.

The forum will be held inside the Cisler Center’s Superior Room on the Lake Superior State University campus. If you can’t attend in person, you can join the Microsoft Teams meeting at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21.
