MANISTEE COUNTY - The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred in Stronach Township on Oct. 31.
At 10:17 p.m. on the 31st, deputies were sent to a two-vehicle crash on M-55 between Kettle Hole Road and Glen Oak Road. The initial investigation indicated that a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling west on M-55 when it struck a deer on the roadway, deputies said.
The collision with the deer caused the pickup driver to lose control, deputies said. The pickup then crossed the center line and hit a 1984 Pontiac Bonneville head on, deputies said.
The driver of the Bonneville, a 59-year-old Manistee man, was declared dead at the scene, deputies said. The driver and passenger of the pickup truck, as well as a passenger of the Bonneville, were taken to Munson Manistee Hospital. There is no report on their conditions, the sheriff’s office said.
A portion of M-55 was closed for several hours during the investigation.
The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Stronach Township Fire/EMS, MMR EMS and Manistee County Central Dispatch.
