In August 2024, troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post investigated a tip that was submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The tip identified a 40-year-old-man from Alpena that was allegedly possessing child sexual abusive material Troopers identified Kevin Kowalsky of Alpena as the suspect.
Troopers completed multiple search warrants for his Google accounts and discovered several illegal videos and photographs. On October 17, troopers obtained a residential search warrant and arrest warrant for the Kowalsky. He was taken into custody without incident.
Kowalsky was lodged at the Alpena County Jail on a nine-count felony warrant. Kowalsky was arraigned on Oct. 18 in the 88th District Court of Alpena on six counts of Child Sexually Abusive Material (Possession), one count of Child Sexually Abusive Material (Aggravated Possession), and two counts of Use of Computer to Commit a Crime.
He was given a $100,000 cash surety bond.
Troopers were assisted by the Traverse City Computer Crimes Unit, the Seventh District MSP Emergency Support Team, the MSP K9 Unit, and detectives from the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team (HUNT).
