Good Samaritan helps Salvation Army after illegal dumping costs the nonprofit

CADILLAC - Salvation Army Officer In Command Lt. Greg Bock said thanks to the generosity of a local good Samaritan, an old mattress and box spring that was dumped off last week has been removed free of charge.

The Cadillac Salvation Army had been dealing with several instances of people leaving old unusable furniture including mattresses and box springs. Bock said each instance cost $225 to dispose of the item, and the Salvation Army is seeing a greater need this year for food for their pantries.

“I spent $260 at Save-A-Lot buying food. And, I basically told him the savings of not having to pay to have those dumps, those mattresses removed, correlated to the food that I just purchased for our food pantries. I told him, I said, sir, you are literally feeding people today,” said Bock.

Bock said they don’t accept donated mattresses or box springs. They are too bulky and take too much space.

If you are unsure about whether they will take a donation, please call ahead at your local Salvation Army to ask.
