Glo-ball golf fundraiser in Houghton Lake raises money for Ava Raye scholarship

HOUGHTON LAKE — On Saturday, a unique fundraiser lit up the night at Pineview Highlands Golf Course in Houghton Lake.

The fourth annual glo-ball golf fundraiser celebrated the life of Ava Raye, who died from cancer at 14 years old. People showed up in droves, donning their glow stick fashion.

The fundraiser hit capacity and raised over $10,000 in donations to support the scholarship in her name. Two graduating seniors from Houghton Lake High School will be chosen to receive a $2,500 scholarship to further their education.

Organizers said it’s a great way to carry on Ava’s caring legacy and wouldn’t be possible without the community.

“Everybody really steps up. We get a lot of local sponsors that go in and donate product or donate either funds to us or donate us our things for the silent auction. Without the support of the community, we would probably only raise about half the amount of funds that we’re able to raise,” said Jeromy Werra, event coordinator.

Over the past four years, they’ve raised $39,000 and hope to go bigger in the future.
