DAFTER — Michigan State Police are investigating an early morning fire that destroyed a commercial building in Chippewa County.
“We have a threshold. Anything of a loss of $500,000 or above of a loss, we automatically request an investigation,” said Austin Conway, Dafter VFD chief.
The Dafter Township volunteer fire department said the building housed machinery, cars and heavy equipment on 6 mile road between m-129 and Mackinac Trail.
A passerby called in the fire around 5:30 Thursday morning. Dafter Township VFD, along with departments from Soo, Bruce and Superior Townships, Bay Mills and Pickford, assisted in putting the fire out.
Sault City Fire also helped by opening up a city fire hydrant for the tankers to refill. Around 90,000 gallons of water was used to battle the fire.
“We used a new tool we acquired recently called the Blitz Fire, and we also used our ground monitor. Those are high-flow water stream devices. We also used Bay Mills’ ladder truck, and we were able to spread a lot of water with that,” said Chief Conway.
There were no injuries. Fire crews cleared the scene just after 9 a.m.
