Tourism bureau discusses changes to Mackinac Island ferry service, wait times

The Mackinac Island Ferry Company (better known as Star Line), is still not running boats out of its St. Ignace location.

That’s forced Shepler’s to shoulder the entire load of visitors heading to the island out of the St. Ignace area. Star Line and Shepler’s are both running boats out of the Mackinaw City locations.

The Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau says even though the lines in St. Ignace may look long, they are moving quickly. And while boats to the island are full, they’re running on schedule.

“The bottom line is, if you talk to the major companies on Mackinac Island, the major hotels and resorts, they haven’t seen any disruption in service, and the complaint level has been very low. Are lines common this time of year? Of course they are because we’re in peak [season]. But the lines are moving very quickly,” said Tim Hygh, Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau executive director. “The Shepler’s boats are really doubling up what they would do this time of year with their departure, and so really the capacity questions are being answered.”

If you have any questions about your trip, the tourism bureau says to contact your ferry line.
