For 50 years, Harbor Hall in Petoskey has been taking care of the Northern Michigan community. Whether it’s to get through an addiction, mental health support, or physical care. It’s a place that is open for anyone in the community.
“The property of Harbor Hall has always supported the community. the house originally, took care of unwed pregnant mothers and in 74, Harbor Hall was created to take care of those with addiction issues, alcohol issues as a kind of a group home, a safe space for people to be. Throughout the years, it grew and expanded and included a 40 person dorm, and that included groups, psychological services, counseling. And about three years ago, we expanded our entire mission to include mental health services and primary care services,” said Peter Bucci, Chief Executive Officer of Harbor Hall.
Harbor Hall doesn’t just help patients fight addiction. They help in all areas of the patient’s life.
“Substance use is just a secondary effect. It’s the solution to the problem that somebody might have for trauma or, any family issues. It’s their way of escape. So our goal is to get to the root cause of the problem, which is located in the community and in the families, and address it there first before it ever comes to the need of requiring residential or high intensity services. So in our outpatient locations, and even on this main campus here, our services are for mental health, family services, depression, couples counseling. It’s the full spectrum of needed services. And we start there first. And then if we need the co-occurring, services with substance use, we’ll tack that on as well,” Bucci said.
Over 50 years of services means that Harbor Hall has been able to positively impact so many lives. And you can help continue the success for the next 50.
“Helping Harbor Hall is not just a financial issue. Supporting Harbor Hall is sending people that have an issue to somebody who’s qualified and who cares. And that is more important than having dollars in our pockets. We are a mission based company. We’re a nonprofit, and our main focus is taking care of the community that we’re in. And that starts with recognizing who in your family and your friends group and in your community might need these services” Bucci said.
And Harbor Hall isn’t done growing quite yet.
“There’s a need to support our emergency department and taking the clients that are, filling up their service area, specifically detox patients and, crisis residential patients. So patients that need more mental health care. That’s not the role of the emergency department. They’ve supported our community as best as they can, and we support them in that mission. But it’s time for us as the experts in that field to to take that back after the Covid year and everything else. So we will be expanding into that, with hopefully a new facility that can handle that. as well as addressing the urgent care, and creating an urgent care located right here in downtown Petoskey,” said Peter Bucci.
