TRAVERSE CITY - If you are missing out on some sleep this weekend you will have a chance to gain an extra hour because we fall back. Daylight saving time is coming to an end for the year this weekend. Bringing us back to standard time and that means it will get dark earlier.
Dr. Abdul Malik from Munson Healthcare describes daylight saving as a society-imposed jet lag. It is recommended to not change your sleep time, but rather get to bed on time and take that extra hour if your body allows it.
It is recommended for a good night sleep to turn off your screens 2 hours before bedtime and to not have a tough workout before bed.
“Good sleep is linked to better health. I mean, we have more of more of an emphasis on getting right amount of sleep because less sleep is linked to cardiovascular disease. Now there is a link to cancer, so we want to get good sleep at night,” says Dr. Abdul M. Malik.
A good amount of sleep depends on your age but you should be getting 7 to 9 hours a night.
