Cats rescued in 2023 finding new homes across the state

TRAVERSE CITY — A year ago this Labor Day weekend, 38 abandoned cats were rescued from a property in Kalkaska.

The cats were found in 90 degree heat, and several were even crammed into carriers together and malnourished. Through socialization and continued medical and emotional care, all but three of those have found their forever homes across the state thanks to TC Paw Cat Rescue.

“To be able to provide homes for the “Kalkaska 38,″ as we call them, means that we’re doing something to make this world a better place for cats,” says Melissa Smith from TC Paw Cat Rescue. “The world we live in is not always welcoming for cats and kittens, and we know that we’re able to step in and somehow make it a better place.”

“If you’re looking to adopt, I think that is always the right option,” says Jessica Lautner, who rescued Carl, one of the 38 cats. “They have so much love to give, and every single day Carl does something different that just makes me fall more in love with him. They’re out there and they need love, and you might as well adopt and not shop.”

If you or anyone you know is interested in giving the final three cats a home or fostering a cat short-term, you can contact TC Paw Cat Rescue at 231-714-4711.
