Chippewas women fall to Ohio in MAC tournament heartbreaker

CLEVELAND - The Central Michigan University women’s basketball team lost 89-88 to Ohio University in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament Wednesday. The one-point defeat was decided in the final seconds of the game.

The fourth-seeded Chippewas finished the season 18-12 overall and 12-6 in conference play. This record is the best the program has seen since the 2020-21 season, when the team won the Mid-American Conference tournament.

Wednesday’s game was the second meeting between the two schools this season. On Dec. 31, Central Michigan lost to Ohio 85-83 in an overtime game.

Sophomore Madi Morson received the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year award before the start of the tournament. She is the fifth player in program history to earn the honor. Morson is the first Central Michigan player and fourth in conference history to be named Freshman of the Year and then Player of the Year as a sophomore.

Morson led the Chippewas with 23 points in the loss to Ohio on Wednesday. She finished the night shooting 7-21 from the field. As the leading scorer in the conference this season, Morson averaged 20 points per game.
