MILAN - Alysa Liu won a gold medal in women’s individual figure skating Thursday, becoming the first U.S. woman to earn an Olympic gold medal, the U.S.’s first since 2002.
Liu entered the free skate on Thursday in third place. She began the final round with a score of 76.59 following her short program on Tuesday.
As the final U.S. competitor and the third-to-last skater to take the ice, Liu performed a routine that featured a triple lutz and a triple salchow. She earned a 150.20 for the free skate, bringing her total winning score to 226.79.
Amber Glenn, 26, finished the event in 13th place for the United States. Glenn had been in 13th place heading into the free skate following an error during her short program earlier in the week.
