GAYLORD - Gaylord St. Mary head coach Rich Moffitt earned his 400th career victory following a 68-63 win against East Jordan.
Moffitt currently serves as the dean of students, a social studies teacher, and the varsity men’s basketball coach at Mary High School. The milestone win comes after a coaching career spanning more than two decades at schools across Northern Michigan.
Moffitt previously worked at Grayling High School for more than 23 years. He served as a teacher and coach from August 1994 until March 2018. His career also included a role as an admissions representative at Northwood University.
The coach has received several high-level recognitions for his work on the sidelines. In 2005, the Associated Press and the Detroit Free Press both named him a Class B All-State Honorable Mention Coach.
Regional publications have consistently recognized Moffitt’s leadership in Northern Michigan. The Weekly Choice Newspaper named him Basketball Coach of the Year in 2006, 2011, and 2013. The newspaper also named his coaching staff to its Dream Team in 2012 and 2017. Additionally, he was named the Holland Area Coach of the Year by the Holland Sentinel in 1992.
Beyond on-court performance, Moffitt’s programs have been recognized for their classroom success. His teams earned Team Academic All-State honors from the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan nearly every year between 1994 and 2018. BCAM also presented Moffitt with its Distinguished Service Award in November 2014.
From 2009 to 2018, Moffitt served as the director of the BCAM-MHSAA Reaching Higher Showcase. The NCAA-certified recruiting event is sponsored by the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. It is considered one of the largest events in the country sponsored by a state athletic association.
Moffit has led the Snowbirds to an 11-7 start to their boys basketball season thus far.
