GAYLORD - David Wahl of Gaylord St. Mary’s was named a winner of the Michigan High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Award this week. Wahl is the only student from the local area to receive the honor.
As a recipient of the award, Wahl will receive a $2,000 scholarship. The MHSAA will formally recognize him during the boys basketball finals at the Breslin Center on March 14.
Wahl is a multi-sport athlete who has participated in three varsity programs at Gaylord St. Mary’s. He played three seasons of varsity football, where he served as team captain and earned all-league recognition. He is currently competing in his second season of varsity basketball and will begin his fourth season of varsity baseball this spring.
His academic record includes several national honors. Wahl was named a National Merit Scholarship Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He also received the College Board National Rural and Small Town recognition award for his academic performance.
Wahl holds leadership roles within the school and the community. He is currently serving as the president of the National Honor Society during his third year with the organization. Additionally, he is in his third year as a member of the school’s student leadership team.
Beyond the school district, Wahl serves as a student representative for the local Downtown Development Authority, a position he has held for three years. He has also represented the region on the national Youth Leadership Council.
Wahl has been involved in the fine arts for four years as a member of the school’s theatre club and music ministry. He participated in the marching, concert, and jazz bands for two years, earning Division one ratings for both district and state solo and ensemble performances.
Wahl will attend the University of Notre Dame after high school. He plans to study civil engineering.
