Lake Superior State University launches fundraising campaign for Laker Hockey

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State University announced the launch of the Laker Hockey Challenge to raise $1.5 million for its Division I men’s program by Dec. 31, 2026. The fundraising campaign celebrates the 60th anniversary of Laker Hockey, which has been part of the university community since 1966.

The university has already secured over $1.2 million in commitments toward the campaign goal. This initiative follows an unprecedented $1.5 million annual anonymous donation made in 2025 to support the long-term sustainability and growth of the hockey program.

A group of donors has already contributed to the $1.2 million total currently raised. These contributors include Coach Jeff Jackson, Ian Ward ’76, Steve Davies ’77, Doug Laprade ’88, Terry Hossack ’88, Bob Ciotti ’81, Gary Machacek ’77, Bud Denker ’80 and the McClellan family.

Jackson, a former coach who is among the prominent donors, emphasized that the campaign focuses on the development of the student-athletes. “This campaign is about giving our student-athletes the resources they need to grow, compete and represent Laker Hockey with pride,” Jackson said.

The university is accepting various forms of contributions for the Division I men’s hockey program, including cash, pledges, and estate gifts. To help donors maximize their impact, pledges can be made over five years. All contributions made before the Dec. 31, 2026, deadline will count toward the $1.5 million goal.

Andrew Rubinstein serves as the senior director of advancement at Lake Superior State University. Those seeking more information about the Laker Hockey Challenge or how to contribute can contact the university’s advancement office directly.

The university will hold events throughout the year to celebrate 60 years of Laker Hockey. Further information regarding these scheduled anniversary events will be released in the coming months.
