Former Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka joins Lions’ offensive staff

DETROIT- The Detroit Lions hired Mike Kafka today to a high-ranking offensive staff role, following his recent tenure as the New York Giants’ interim head coach.

Kafka served as interim head coach for the Giants during seven games this season, winning the last two contests.

Kafka played six years as an NFL quarterback before coaching. He spent five seasons in Kansas City, four of them as quarterbacks coach, helping Patrick Mahomes win a Super Bowl.

The Lions had expressed interest in Kafka before this announcement, having interviewed him for their vacant offensive coordinator position. However, the team decided to hire Drew Petzing for that role earlier this week.

⁣⁣⁣Kafka’s innovation shone in the matchup between the Lions and Giants this season, where he orchestrated a game that saw his team tally 517 yards and 27 points, notably without key players like starting quarterback Jaxson Dart and running back Cam Skattebo.⁣⁣⁣
