Payoute is second Bulldog to earn Cliff Harris Award.

BIG RAPIDS — Justin Payoute, a senior safety at Ferris State University, was awarded the 2025 Cliff Harris Award for being the top defensive performer in NCAA Division II football. The prestigious award is presented by Wright, Lindsey & Jennings LLP.

The Cliff Harris Award recognizes exceptional talent among small college defensive players across NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA levels. Payoute’s selection as the recipient marks him as only the second Bulldog to earn this honor, following in the footsteps of his former teammate Caleb Murphy, who won the award in 2022.

Payoute’s standout performance this season included nine interceptions, the highest total across all collegiate divisions and 72 total tackles, contributing significantly to the Bulldogs’ defensive unit, which ranked among the top programs nationally. His efforts were integral to the team’s success this season, where they secured their fourth NCAA Division II National Championship in five years, finishing the season with an unbeaten 16-0 record.

This streak showcases the Bulldogs’ consistency and excellence in performance throughout Payoute’s tenure at the university.
