Laker goaltender Applebee shines in overtime win against Northern Michigan

Lakers win 2-1 in overtime and 2-1 in regulation

SAULT STE. MARIE —Lake Superior State defeated rival Northern Mich. 2-1 in overtime on Saturday and again two-one in regulation on Sunday.

The success grants the Lakers a significant lead in the Cappo Cup series and earns them five vital points in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

Laker goaltender Rorke Applebee was recognized as CCHA Goaltender of the Week on Monday following his impressive performances this weekend. Laker head coach Damon Whitten praised Applebee’s consistent play, stating, “Great goaltending all weekend long. We love our guy, Applebee. He’s been so consistent and at the top of his game.” Applebee’s performance was crucial, making 29 saves in the win on Saturday and 43 saves on Sunday.

Throughout the weekend, Applebee faced 13 or more shots in four of the six full periods played, showcasing his calm demeanor as he executed several spectacular stops for the home crowd. This season, he ranks 12th nationally among goaltenders with a .924 save percentage and Sunday’s game marked his fourth with 40 or more saves.

The Lakers are set to compete next against Bowling Green on Jan. 16. Following that matchup, they will host the Superior Ice Showdown at GFL Memorial Gardens in Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, on Jan. 23, where they will face St. Thomas.
