BOYNE CITY — Tammy Remsburg, a powerlifter from Boyne City, has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming a world champion.
She competed in the IDFPA World Championships in South Korea, marking the first world championship held by the International Drug Free Powerlifting Association.
Remsburg’s journey into powerlifting began after she developed lupus and was forced to stop running.
Seeking a way to stay active after becoming an empty nester, she discovered powerlifting, which quickly led her to compete at national levels and eventually capture a world title.
Remsburg described her experience in South Korea as an adjustment.
“It’s a totally different atmosphere,” she said. “It’s a totally different country. There are so many variables that you just don’t know.” To prepare, she trained in Seoul to acclimate to the environment, allowing her to perform effectively during the competition.
Remsburg encourages others, especially those her age, to consider powerlifting.
“I would get everybody involved in powerlifting if I could. It was amazing.”
Looking ahead, Remsburg has no intentions of slowing down. She plans to pursue further competitions and continues to advocate for powerlifting among older adults.
