EAST LANSING- The Michigan High School Athletic Association’s 2024-25 Multi-Sport Participation Survey revealed that 45.4% of student-athletes at member high schools participate in two or more sports.
The survey, conducted last spring, received responses from 82.7% of MHSAA member high schools. The MHSAA initiated the survey to combat issues related to early sports specialization and promote multi-sport participation, which can help reduce the risk of overuse injuries and burnout.
For the 2024-25 school year, participation rates show that 47.8% of male athletes and 42.3% of female athletes are involved in multiple sports. This reflects a continued upward trend since the survey’s inception, which has seen a combined increase of 2.6% in multi-sport participation since the first study after the 2017-18 school year.
Lake Leelanau St. Mary was one of the top schools in Class D for multi-sport participation at 88.2%.
