All-Star Gleyber Torres returns to Tigers for another season

DETROIT — Second baseman Gleyber Torres has accepted the Detroit Tigers’ one-year, $22.025 million qualifying offer, the team announced ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Torres, who will turn 29 on Dec. 13, has completed eight seasons in Major League Baseball, spending his first seven years with the New York Yankees before joining the Tigers on a one-year, $15 million contract in December 2024.

After the Tigers were eliminated in the Division Series by the Mariners, Torres revealed that he had been playing through a sports hernia on his right side for much of the second half of the season.

He underwent surgery in October and is expected to be ready for Spring Training in 2026, given the typical two-month rehabilitation period.

Despite being selected as an All-Star starter for the first time in his career in 2025, Torres’ performance declined in the second half of the season, likely due in part to his injury. He batted .223 with a .659 OPS after the All-Star break, a drop from his .281 average and .812 OPS in the first half.

Over the past four seasons, he has averaged 20 home runs per season with a .261 batting average and 110 OPS+. His plate discipline has improved, as evidenced by his low chase rate of 17.1% in 2025, second only to Juan Soto.

With his acceptance of the qualifying offer, Torres is set to remain with the Tigers for the 2026 season, where he hopes to return to form following his recovery from surgery.
