High school volleyball: Titans triumph over Blue Devils in straight sets

SAULT STE. MARIE — SAULT STE. MARIE — Traverse City West gained momentum heading into district play next week with a straight-set sweep over Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday night.

The Titans dominated early, jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the opening game after Marissa Ansorge’s ace forced a Blue Devils timeout. Olivia Kandow and Savana Sullivan each delivered strong kills as Traverse City West extended its lead to 8-1.

Sault Ste. Marie battled back with key plays from Emma Flick and Jillian Width, who each notched kills and an ace to narrow the gap. Izzy Hardy also added a kill to keep the Blue Devils within reach.

However, the Titans’ front line proved too strong. Kandow’s power at the net and a final block by Emily Kelsey sealed the first set 25-14.

Traverse City West continued its dominant play, taking the next two sets 25-8 and 25-18 to complete the sweep.

The Titans will carry the win into next week’s district tournament as postseason play begins across the region.
