NFL- The preseason has officially concluded for the Detroit Lions, and all eyes are now set on Detroit’s week one matchup against the Packers on September 7th.
The Lions are now in the process of cutting down the roster to get to the league’s 53-man limit that must be set by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26th. One of those cuts the team announced today was quarterback Hendon Hooker. The former 3rd-round pick struggled this preseason in his four games of action. After the team’s initial belief that he would compete for the #2 spot, Hooker will now head to waivers, making Kyle Allen the clear backup.
The team also announced that they have released offensive lineman Dan Skipper. The 31-year-old Skipper has served as the Lions swing tackle for the past three seasons, appearing in 44 games and making eleven starts for Detroit. He will live on in Lions lore due to a penalty he drew on a game-winning 2-point attempt that was called off late in the season against the Cowboys in 2023 after officials said Skipper failed to report as eligible. Detroit would defeat the Cowboys in their next matchup the following year.
Wide receiver Jackson Meeks will also be sent to the waivers. Meeks led all Detroit receivers in the preseason for yards, and Detroit is reportedly interested in signing him to the practice squad if he were to clear waivers.
Roster cuts will continue up to the deadline of 4 p.m. on August 26th.
