Ferris State’s Andy Bronkema headed to Central Michigan University as new head basketball coach

MOUNT PLEASANT- After 12 seasons as the head basketball coach at Ferris State University, Andy Bronkema is making the jump to the Division 1 level after Central Michigan announced his hiring Monday.

The McBain native led Ferris to a 25-9 overall record last season and earned a spot in the NCAA Division 2 tournament for the 9th time in the last 11 seasons.

Bronkema compiled a 279-105 overall record during his time with the Bulldogs, including 20-win seasons in each of the last 10 years, and a 2018 National Championship including an NCAA all-time best 38-1 overall record. Bronekma won National Coach of the Year honors that year and ranks as the second-winningest coach of all time at Ferris State. He also brought home five GLIAC Tournament Championships and four regular-season GLIAC Championships during his tenure.

Ferris State Athletics Director Steve Brockelbank had high praise for Bronkema, saying in a press release:

“Andy has been an incredible ambassador for Ferris State University and Bulldog basketball and will be greatly missed. While we will miss his leadership, dedication, and commitment, we’re excited for him and look forward to watching him at the D1 level. He has poured his heart and soul into our program and earned this opportunity” (Brockelbank, Ferris State).

Bronkema replaces Tony Barbee at Central, who was fired earlier this month after four seasons.
