MOUNT PLEASANT - Cayden Smith is a freshman who went to Beal City High School already making an impact on the CMU baseball team as a freshman. Smith leads the team in doubles with 11 and has already hit three home runs on the year. He made history in high school, becoming the first person to pitch a perfect game in the state championship. Smith plays every game for the Chippewas, starting at shortstop and he’s also pitched in 6 games so far this season.
Smith talked about how his days at Beal City shaped him into the player he is now.
“There’s nothing really like, Beal City High School. You know, it’s a winning program, that’s the tradition there. You’re expected to go out there and perform well, so that’s kind of what helped me. You know that standard is still sits with me today,” said Smith.
Central Michigan head coach Jake Sabol has really liked what he’s seen out of Cayden so far, and knows he’s got what it takes to be a star.
“I don’t want him to settle for what he’s done so far or just kind of be content being in the lineup every day, because there’s a whole nother notch in there that we haven’t reached yet, potentially could, you know, it’s going to be different. We’re excited to help him get there,” said Sabol.
