SAULT STE. MARIE - The 56th running of the I-500 snowmobile endurance race in Sault Ste. Marie wrapped up Saturday evening with thousands in attendance.
The green flag dropped at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, to officially start the grueling 500-mile race.
Unlike last year when cold and snow was hard to come by, the temperature was 10 below zero at the start of the race.
Speeds on the one-mile oval topped 110 mph at times down the stretch, organizers said.
After eight and a half hours of racing, the #18 Nelson Polaris team from Minnesota took home first place with only two riders.
“Charlie, my brother, he races with me,” said Dan Revering, who won the race with his brother. “It’s just us two. He rode a great race. I did a 100, he did 100, I did a hundred, he did 100, then I did the last 100. That worked out really good. He kept us on the lead lap and then I just sprinted on that thing.”
Revering said his team placed fourth, seventh, ninth and 21st at previous I-500 races.
