Ellsworth's first inaugural athletics Hall of Fame class inducted

ELLSWORTH- Today between the girls’ and boys’ varsity games at Ellsworth a special ceremony was held honoring the first inaugural half of fame class to be inducted.

Five former Lancers were honored and inducted for their success and contributions to Ellsworth Athletics.

The inductees included Dwight “Ike” Boss, Hugh Campbell, Harold Edson, Hud Drench, and Angie Peterson.

Each received a framed piece of the original short board gym floor from 1952 that is still in use and played on by Lancer’s athletes today.

Each inductee’s biography and list of achievements is also featured on the school’s new digital trophy case and can also be found on their website.

Ranging from start athletes to highly respected coaches, superintendent Aaron Gaffney says he could not overstate the impact these individuals had on the community.

“We put together a group of lifelong Ellsworth residents this summer who have witnessed thousands of basketball games, and softball games, and track, track and cross-country between them. And so, we got them together and we talked about who are the first five we’d like to bring in, and yeah, we were really unanimous on these five as being people that deserve to be in that inaugural class” (Aaron Gaffney).

Two of the inductees also spoke about the experience and being back on their old stomping grounds.

“It was really cool that Ike was honored tonight as well, because he was my coach during the years that I was here... these years at Ellsworth High School shaped me to who I am today. And a lot of it was the coaches and teammates and teachers and my family that helped make that happen” (Angie Peterson, Inductee).

“I tell you what, it means a lot. You know, you think about all the great times we had here... I mean, we had so many good times on this floor” (Hud Drenth).
