TRAVERSE CITY-- Girl’s wrestling is a rapidly growing Northern Michigan sport.
Tonight, Traverse City West held the first ever dual meet in Traverse City.
The Titans girls wrestling team was established in the 2021-2022 season after the MHSAA announced they would hold individual championships for girls wrestling.
This year it was announced that the first girls team state champion would be crowned, and the Titans want to be prepared.
Lake City, Manton, and Kingsley all made the trip to participate.
2nd year head coach Adam Beers is looking to grow his program to continue to participate in and host these duals, and said simply holding this one was enough to sway a couple girls to join the program.
“Luckily, we’ve been able to grow our program each of the last four years, and, we’ve actually got, 11 girls on the team now.
So, this will be the first time that we’ve ever done this dual meet structure. So, the girls all line up on the side of the mat and they’re cheering. It really gives the girls a chance to get behind each person and be there cheering for them on the side, and this is what really brings together the team aspect of wrestling” (Adam Beers, head coach).
Junior Abbey Dahl won her contest quickly, and liked that she could enjoy her teammates matches as well.
“I think that it’s because you’re actually very interested. I feel like it forces you to be more interested in what your teammates are doing because, like an individual tournament, you want to support them. But it’s also like, I can go off and do my other thing, but here it’s all me” (Abbey Dahl, Junior).
West walked away with wins over both Kingsley and Manton.
