Harbor Springs to raise money for cancer patients with Pink Game

HARBOR SPRINGS-- The Harbor Springs volleyball team is having a solid season. They’re above .500 right now and the winners of five in a row.

But this Thursday is a reminder that sometimes sports are about more than wins and losses. For the “Pink Game,” the Rams will play East Jordan to raise money for cancer patients and their families around the area.

Harbor Springs partnered with Karmanos Cancer Institute in Petoskey to raise funds with the help of JV coach Morgan Pemberton, who is also a full-time employee there.

“The holiday season in the fall can be really challenging for most of our cancer patients. We have a lot of cancer patients that come from the U.P. So, our proceeds will be going to room and board and gas cards just to help those families out because it’s really stressful,” said Pemberton. “Some of those patients have to come two to 3 to 4 times a week for treatment, and it costs a lot to travel and stay at a hotel all the time, and especially the island patients taking a ferry.”

Each team will be decked out in pink and invite the fans too as well. Admission is free, and there will be a booth with Karmanos gear available for purchase and pamphlets on other ways to get involved.

“I think as a community, we’ve all known someone that’s been impacted by breast cancer and cancer in general. I know for myself I’ve had relatives [impacted]. So, it’s just a really important cause...I’m happy that we get to help,” said senior Taylor Dickinson.

“Win or loss, I just really hope that we raise a lot of money for the care center. That’s the most important thing,” said head coach Josephine Johnson.
