TRAVERSE CITY — Nick Edson is far more than just a Tigers superfan.

His career started when he was in just sixth grade, where he was given a shot to write sports columns for a newspaper in Mancelona and did so until he began playing varsity sports himself.

Nick attended CMU and was the sports editor of the campus paper and was hired soon after by the Record Eagle in Traverse City.

He won more than 30 writing awards over the course of his illustrious career and was twice elected the president of the Michigan Sports Editors Association.

Edson rubbed shoulders with many pro athletes over his career, including covering the 1984 World Series Tigers team, but his love for the game came far before.

“So 1959, I was five years old, bought my first baseball card, and I said, hey, I got a Detroit Tiger. My dad was in the bathroom shaving. He came out with his whole face full of, shaving cream and said, oh my gosh, that’s a big deal. So that fired me up to go into baseball, and we played in the backyard all the time,” Edson said.

But all along the way Nick continued his other passion, sports memorabilia collecting.

“But I also never stopped being a collector. And then these are some of the nice things I have. Tiger wise in 1927, real thick cardboard Detroit Tigers schedule from the Detroit Free Press. And when I went off to college, I came back and I said, dad, I probably my cards got tossed out. He goes, oh, no, I saved them all downstairs. So I had those in. In 1973, I set up at my first show in Detroit at the Troy Hilton. And so I’ve been around the hobby for quite a while. And then since I retired nine years ago, it’s what I do every day. I do eBay, I buy and sell stuff, and, it’s I enjoy it a lot. I mean, it’s like three hours a day in the morning before everybody else is up, so,” Edson said.

From an original Ty Cobb card and thousands of others, including bobbleheads and game programs, Nick is surrounded by rich baseball history.

He hopes to see the Tigers etch in some new baseball history of their own.

“This is all gravy to me. Making the playoffs was the big deal. Winning those games in Houston. This is all gravy, so I don’t get over the top losing or anything because we’ve already made our mark. So yeah, I was I’ve always been a Tiger fan and I always will be a Tiger fan,” Edson said.
