NEWAYGO – Newaygo High School introduced Ralph Munger as its new head football coach on Tuesday morning.
Munger is an iconic figure in Michigan high school football coaching history, having led Rockford to three state titles and 26 consecutive playoff appearances during his 28-year stint as the Rams head coach.
The stadium at Rockford even bears his name.
Munger also spent time coaching at Frankenmuth and, most recently, as an assistant at Mancelona.
Newaygo finished just 2-7 this past season and Munger is the Lions’ fourth head coach in the past four years. He said he’s hoping to ‘restore the roar’ for the Lions.
“Attitude is everything,” Munger said. “You hear that but I really believe that and we are going to make things happen. My track record says that I’m not just blowing smoke.”
“It’s amazing, with all of our coaches we have always heard about going to be rebuilt, but [he’s] saying he’s going to restore us,” said sophomore quarterback Blake Kerr. “We all have faith in him and he’s going to do great.”
