DETROIT – Seven local wrestlers claimed state titles at the MHSAA boys and girls individual state finals at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday.
Seven athletes had runner-up finishes while 48 others finished third through eighth in their weight class to earn all-state honors.
In Division 2 boys, Gaylord had two state champions with Louden Stradling (130) and Brayden Gautreau (171). Fremont’s Tee Ware finished as runner-up in the 119 weight class.
Wrestling at 215, Hunter Huguelet from Gladwin took home the state trophy in the Div. 3. Mason County Central’s Andrew Quinn won the state title in 285. Hart’s Mason Cantu (145), Kingsley’s Aiden Shier (152) and Tri-County’s Jake Nelson (171) all had second-place finishes in Division 3.
For Div. 4 boys, Hesperia’s River Roberson won the state championship in the 135 weight class. Cole Hopkins out of Evart captured the state crown in 171. Traverse City St. Francis’ Gavin Wilmouth (160) came in second place.
In girls, Boyne City star Lydia Krauss dominated her way to a state title in the 155 weight class. Gladwin’s Tricia Pyrzewski (100) and Gaylord’s Sunni LaFond (105) finished as runners-up.
After becoming Boyne City’s second ever individual regional champion, Krauss dominated in the first MHSAA girls finals.
She went 4-0 on her way to claiming the state title over fellow nationally fifth-ranked wrestler Amarisa Manuel of Romeo, who she had lost to three times prior.
Krauss becomes the first state champion in Boyne City wrestling history and the first local female to take home the state crown. The state finals win also marked her 100th career victory.
