TRAVERSE CITY — Northwest Education Services has partnered with Kettering University to establish a new $25,000 scholarship for students. The renewable award is available to any student who applies and is accepted into the university.
The scholarship program has been in development for approximately two years. Unlike many traditional financial aid packages, this initiative has no cap on the number of students who can receive the funding, provided they meet the university’s admission standards.
The scholarship provides $25,000 and is renewable for up to four years of study. To maintain the award, recipients must continue to meet the GPA level that was required for their initial admission to the university. While the program expands science, technology, engineering and math opportunities, officials emphasized that the funding is not restricted to students in those specific fields. Patrick Lamb, assistant superintendent for career and technical education at Northwest Education Services, said the scholarship is open to any student at the center who meets the university’s admission and eligibility requirements.
“I think some folks thought it was specific to our engineering program,” Lamb said. “It’s not it’s specific to any student that meets their, eligibility requirements and is admitted, would be eligible for the scholarship. And once admitted, they’re they’re eligible. And I know that we have an engineering student right now that’s in consideration of that.”
The agreement with Kettering University adds to a growing list of higher education partnerships maintained by the North Ed Foundation. Other participating institutions that offer scholarships to students include Lake Superior State University, Ferris State University, Central Michigan University, Davenport University and Michigan State University. The foundation also holds similar agreements with Northwestern Michigan College and Michigan Technological University.
