TRAVERSE CITY — All flight arrivals and departures at Cherry Capital Airport are cancelled until at least 9 a.m. Monday. The groundings are the result of the second phase of a winter storm moving through Northern Michigan.
The winter storm is delivering a combination of heavy snow, strong winds and ice accumulation across the region. Impacted areas include the Upper Peninsula, the Tip of the Mitt and several surrounding counties.
The storm’s second phase began Sunday afternoon and is expected to be the most severe portion of the weather event. Heavy snow and strong winds are currently impacting the Upper Peninsula and the Tip of the Mitt. Weather forecasters have identified Leelanau, Wexford and Northeast regions as areas that could experience significant conditions.
Ice accumulation remains a primary concern for the region. Forecasters predict specific areas could see up to half an inch of ice as the storm progresses. Airport officials are advising travelers to check their flight status directly with airlines or via the airport’s website.
Flights are expected to remain grounded until at least 9 a.m. Monday. Cherry Capital Airport will provide live updates on its Facebook and YouTube pages as weather conditions develop.
