TRAVERSE CITY — A man is dead after Traverse City police officers shot him when he came at them armed with a knife inside a Munson Place apartment Thursday evening.
Traverse City Police Chief Matt Richmond said officers responded to the 400 block of Munson Place around 4:45 p.m. for a reported domestic assault involving a knife. When officers entered the apartment, they found a 50-year-old man lying on the living room floor.
Richmond said when officers announced their presence, the man got up, armed with a knife and came at them. Officers gave loud verbal commands, which the man did not follow.
Officers then deployed a Taser, which Richmond said was ineffective. Officers fired their duty weapons, stopping the threat.
Life-saving measures were performed on scene, but the man died from his injuries, Richmond said.
A female victim was taken to Munson Medical Center for injuries she sustained during the domestic assault.
All officers who responded were uninjured. They have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
Richmond said he requested the Michigan State Police investigate the incident.
Lt. Ashley Miller, public information officer for the Michigan State Police Seventh District, said MSP’s special investigation section and crime lab are on scene. Miller said the agency is working alongside the Traverse City Police Department to conduct a full investigation.
Miller said updates will be available on the Michigan State Police social media page.
