TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Area Public Schools released its 2026-2027 academic calendar Tuesday, revealing that students will begin classes on Sept. 8, 2026.
This start date is later than in previous years to accommodate the Labor Day holiday.
The district scheduled the first day of school to fall the day after Labor Day, which occurs on Sept. 7, 2026.
To balance the later start, the district will implement a shorter winter break to prevent the school year from lasting until late June.
The winter break for the 2026-2027 school year is scheduled to run from Dec. 23, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027.
District officials shortened this period to ensure the academic year does not extend into the third week of June.
The calendar also features a reduction in the number of early release days. Associate Superintendent Coni Taylor explained that the district made this change to help families and staff manage their schedules. Taylor noted that despite the change in release days, the district maintained its commitment to staff training and student learning.
