CADILLAC — The Huron-Manistee National Forests will conduct prescribed fire operations throughout the spring and summer to mitigate the risk of wildfires. These controlled burns are expected to continue through September, pending required approvals and favorable weather conditions.

The operations are designed to reduce overgrown vegetation that serves as fuel for wildfires. By managing this growth, officials aim to protect local communities, natural resources and infrastructure.

Forestry officials will coordinate with local authorities throughout the burn window. County emergency management departments will be notified when burning begins in their specific jurisdictions. Residents can track scheduled operations through Inciweb, the interagency incident information system. Information will also be shared through the Huron-Manistee National Forests website and social media channels.

Certain areas may close to the public for several days to ensure safety during and after the fires. Officials will post warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas. Residents should expect to see or smell smoke while operations are active.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling near burn sites. The Forest Service recommends that drivers slow down and turn on their headlights if they encounter smoke on the road. For those monitoring local air quality, data is available through the AirNow website or mobile application.

Forestry crews will evaluate weather conditions in the hours immediately preceding each scheduled burn. Operations may be canceled if weather conditions do not meet the safety requirements necessary to proceed.
