WEXFORD COUNTY — A Wexford County motor carrier officer has been recognized for lifesaving actions he took during a medical emergency in October 2025.

Motor Carrier Officer Josh Roll of the Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division received the American Heart Association’s HeartSaver Hero Award on Feb. 11 and the Michigan State Police Lifesaving Award on Feb. 25 for his response during the incident.

The emergency happened Oct. 10, 2025, in Wexford County while Roll was off duty. After being contacted by a neighbor about a medical emergency, Roll retrieved his first aid kit and automated external defibrillator, or AED, from his patrol vehicle and responded to the scene.

When he arrived, Roll and neighbor Joy Ruetz found the person in cardiac arrest. They began CPR and used the AED, continuing lifesaving efforts until advanced medical personnel arrived.

Cherry Grove Fire and Rescue provided additional medical care and transported the patient to a hospital.

The patient survived.

“MCO Roll did exactly what he was trained to do, and Ms. Ruetz stepped up without hesitation to help save a life,” Lt. Ashley Miller said.

Michigan State Police commended Roll, Ruetz and Cherry Grove Fire and Rescue for their efforts and commitment to saving lives.
