ALPENA COUNTY — At approximately 8 p.m. Feb. 19 in Alpena County, troopers from the Michigan State Police Alpena Post arrested a 38-year-old Alpena man following a retail fraud investigation and foot chase at Walmart.

Troopers responded to the store for a report involving Kyle Schram of Alpena.

The preliminary investigation indicated Schram was allegedly seen removing security tags from merchandise and placing the items in his shopping cart before walking past all points of sale and exiting the store.

When troopers contacted him, Schram pushed his shopping cart into a trooper and fled on foot across the parking lot. Troopers pursued him and, after a brief struggle, arrested him for retail fraud.

During a search of Schram, troopers located suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl in his pocket. He was lodged at the Alpena County Jail without incident.

Schram was arraigned Feb. 23 in the 88th District Court in Alpena County on charges of possession of methamphetamine or ecstasy, possession of a narcotic or cocaine less than 25 grams, first-degree retail fraud and assault, resisting or obstructing a police officer.

His next court appearance is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. March 11.

NOTE: All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
