Sentencing set for man who shot and burned MSP vehicles

SAULT STE. MARIE — A Florida man who shot up Michigan State Police cruisers and then set them on fire, is set to be sentenced later this month, nearly two-and-a-half years after the incident.

James Itani, 39 at the time, was originally charged with one count of terrorism, 11 counts of attempted murder, one count of third-degree arson and multiple counts of weapons violations.

MSP said Itani set fire to and shot at the cruisers on the morning of Sept. 6, 2023, at the Sault Ste. Marie post. He also shot at troopers the next day when they went to arrest him.

Itani will be sentenced Mar. 24 at 8:30 a.m. in 50th Circuit Court in Sault Ste. Marie.
