CADILLAC — The City of Cadillac plans to procure up to 2,300 tons of road salt for the 2026/2027 winter season through a state-wide bidding program. The purchase is expected to cost approximately $160,000, which averages about $70 per ton.

To secure these rates, Cadillac participates in the State of Michigan’s Delivering Extended Agreements Locally program, known as MiDEAL. This collaborative bidding process allows the city to join other road agencies to achieve cost savings through economies of scale.

The procurement process follows a specific annual timeline. Orders for the road salt are placed in the spring and the state contract is typically finalized by late summer. Early shipments of the salt generally begin arriving in Cadillac during the late fall to prepare for seasonal requirements.

Funding for the purchase is available in the Stores and Garage Fund. As the salt is used throughout the winter, the actual costs are charged to the Major and Local Street Funds and other city activities based on recorded usage.

The recommendation for the purchase is made pursuant to Section 2-299 and Section 2-312 of the City Code. Cadillac has participated in the MiDEAL program for many years to maintain competitive pricing for road maintenance materials through the state’s bidding process.

Orders for the road salt are scheduled to be placed this spring. The city expects the first shipments to arrive in late fall 2026.
