TRAVERSE CITY — An 11 year old’s birthday wish isn’t for presents, but to raise money for cancer patients.
In a heartwarming display of kindness, Nate Doerr is celebrating his birthday by raising money for Munson Healthcare’s Cancer Patient Needs Fund. Nate is a fifth grader at Eastern Elementary school in Traverse City and a passionate hockey player.
He has been working tirelessly to collect donations, raising around $3,000.
Doerr has been helped by the Traverse City Central Trojans hockey team, who donated $1 for every shot Nate saved on the ice. He is dedicated to giving back, and he encourages everyone to donate, even if it’s just a couple of dollars.
“I want to donate to cancer because it sounds like it’s a good thing to do to all of the people. Because, like, it’s a terrible thing to go through,” Doerr said. “My mom has been through it. A lot of people have been through it, and I’m sick and tired of cancer and I want to get rid of it.”
He says the fundraiser will continue for a few more months and will make giving back a birthday tradition. Click here if you’d like to donate.
