PETOSKEY — Kilwins, a premium confectionery and ice cream franchise, announced plans today to expand into the Arizona market over the next three to five years. The Michigan-based company is targeting numerous locations in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas for its initial entry into the state.

The brand aims to capitalize on Arizona’s business-friendly environment and consistent population growth. Arizona ranked 14th for entrepreneurship in 2025 and was recognized as the third most affordable state to live and operate a business. These factors, combined with year-round demand for frozen treats, prompted the company to prioritize the state for its latest expansion.

The Phoenix and Scottsdale markets provide high-traffic, walkable retail districts and a thriving tourism ecosystem. According to the company, these regions combine short-term visitor demand with long-term residential growth, creating a favorable environment for specialty retail and experiential brands. Kilwins does not currently operate any locations in Arizona, making the state a priority for scaling the brand’s footprint.

Brian Britton serves as the president and CEO of Kilwins. He noted that the state’s climate and retail growth align with the company’s requirements for experienced operators and new owners.

“Arizona supports strong unit economics and year-round demand for ice cream and our premium confections, driven by a steady climate and favorable operating conditions and is a market with high-traffic, walkable retail areas,” Britton said.

The company reported that more than half of its current operators expand to become multi-unit franchise owners. Rachel Kinser owns Kilwins locations in St. Charles and Naperville, Ill., and credits the company’s internal programs for her ability to manage multiple stores.

“Kilwins makes it easy to hit the ground running,” Kinser said. “Their comprehensive support, training and marketing programs give franchisees all the tools they need to succeed. With that foundation in place, I can focus on running my stores and delivering the premium treats and seasonal offerings that keep guests coming back.”

Founded in 1947, Kilwins currently operates more than 185 locations. The brand is known for its open kitchen setting, where guests can watch fudge being paddled on marble tables and caramel cooking in copper kettles. Entrepreneur magazine has ranked the company No. 1 in the candy, ice cream and frozen desserts category for 10 consecutive years in its Franchise 500 list.

Kilwins plans to introduce a smaller-footprint store model in 2026 to facilitate entry into new communities across the Southwest. The company is currently seeking multi-unit franchise owners to join its nationwide expansion.
