Pellston man arrested for impersonating police officer during traffic stop

CHEBOYGAN COUNTY — A 30-year-old man from Pellston was arrested Sunday after he allegedly falsely identified himself as a police officer during a traffic stop. The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office conducted the stop on Feb. 15, 2026.

The suspect was taken into custody after he reportedly refused lawful commands to exit his vehicle. He faces charges of Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer and False Representation of a Law Enforcement Officer.

During the traffic stop, the driver claimed to be a police officer to the deputies on the scene. He subsequently refused lawful orders to exit the vehicle, leading deputies to take him into custody. Following the arrest, the individual was transported to the Cheboygan County Jail.

Sheriff Todd Ross addressed the arrest and the risks associated with such encounters. Ross noted that the department’s staff is prepared to manage individuals who do not comply with orders during roadside interactions.

“Impersonating a law enforcement officer and refusing lawful commands during a traffic stop are serious offenses,” Ross said. “Our deputies are trained to handle these situations professionally and safely.”

The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office issued a reminder that falsely representing oneself as a law enforcement officer is a criminal offense. The department stated that any individuals found doing so will be prosecuted accordingly.

The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 17, 2026. The proceeding will take place at the Cheboygan County Courthouse.
